A SOLDIER serving in The Mercian Regiment (2nd battalion) has been killed in Afghanistan.

The soldier died after being caught in a blast on Wednesday (March 21) from an improvised explosive device. He was part of the Brigade Advisory Group working alongside an Afghan security forces patrol tasked with disrupting insurgent activity in the Mirmandab region of Nahr-e Saraj district in Helmand province.

Lieutenant Colonel Gordon MacKenzie, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said: "The thoughts and condolences of everyone serving in the Task Force are with his family and friends."

The soldier's family have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.

The Mercian Regiment was awarded the Freedom of the Borough in 2010 and marked the honour with a march through the town.
